This is ridiculous. ETA have wanted peace since 2001 and repeatedly tried to bring the Spanish government to talks. When Aznar fell and the Socialist Party took over, they thought things would move forward. They didn't and the Spanish increased attacks on ETA and Batasuna members, as well as taking a harder approach to the use of the Basque language. The airport bomb which gave the Spanish state its current excuse to ignore the Basque people was a ploy by ETA to do what the IRA did in Manchester. Unfortunately, the SP is obstinate as the PP when it comes to Basque republicanism (mainly due to the rightwards drift of the French state).

The Spanish have given Catalonia complete autonomy (it is now the most autonomous region of Europe) but will not even consider doing the same for Euskal Herria. This is because the SP relies on Catalonia for votes in the Federal elections but not on Euskal Herria. Its ridiculous that bourgeoise politicking should mean a country that has time and again reaffirmed its republican aspirations be actively suppressed.

There is only one way that ETA can now respond: a returned to the Armed Struggle.
