Bush's increase in the popular vote, however, appears to be a small (albeit crucial) side-effect in a much more worrying development. Bush is either loved or hated, and the Republicans are becoming more Republican and the Democrats are becoming more democrat. If Bush is serious about stopping this split of America, he's going to have to do more to govern from the centre. Unfortunately, his lurch to the right after the 2000 election, where he was only elected by a constituional accident, and his promises made to the Christian Conservatives don't fill me with much confidence. I hope I am wrong here.
