In the November '04 elections, at the federal level, the GOP retained control of the White House, and increased its seats in the US House and Senate by four and and least four, respectively.
In the 49 lower houses of state legislatures, the GOP increased its seats in 18 states, gaining control of 3 houses; democrats lost control of 5 houses, 2 being tied by Republican gains.
In the 50 upper chambers of state legislatures, the GOP increased its seats in 17 states, gaining control in two houses, and tying for a third.
The GOP now controls both houses of Congress in 20 states, controls both houses of Congress and the Governor's mansion in 12 states, and of the 17 states where democrats control both houses of Congress, only seven are not symied by a veto-wielding Republican governor. 29 states have Republican governors.
If the situation could get any grimmer for the democrats, it's not immediately clear how.
